OVERVIEW
In 2018, the Society of Toxicology of Canada (STC) hosted their 50th Annual Symposium and the program was dedicated to New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), a term used to characterize the use of non-animal approaches to animal testing.  Since this symposium, stakeholders and interested parties have continued to focus efforts on advancing the use of NAMs in all health sectors including regulatory and academia. The purpose of the Government Sector Knowledge Transfer Webinar: Modernizing Efforts for Risk Assessment and Management is to showcase three ongoing NAM-related initiatives. Participants will hear from our keynote speaker and the Founder and Executive Director at the Canadian Centre for Alternatives to Animal Methods (CCAAM), Dr. Charu Chandrasekera, on how CCAAM plays a pivotal role in advancing alternative solutions to animal testing. Dr. Sandrine Deglin, a Senior Scientific Program Manager with the Health and Environmental Sciences Institute (HESI), will then provide an overview of HESI and ongoing projects related to NAMs while focusing on a project she is currently leading. Our final speaker, Yadvinder (Yad) Bhuller, Executive Advisor at Health Canada, will share a multi-year initiative known as the Next Generation Decision-Making for Health and Environmental Risks. His talk will provide insights on this University of Ottawa-Health Canada embedded research initiative aimed at understanding the evolution of decision-making, which includes considering the role of NAMs in a risk decision-making process.
